What is a Defined Benefit Pension?

Governing Laws

TRS is governed by a six member Board, appointed by the Governor of Montana. Numerous federal tax laws, Internal Revenue Codes, and laws created by the Montana Legislature establish guidance, boundaries, and requirements for TRS to adhere to with members and employers.

Montana Board of Investments

The Montana Board of Investments (BOI) is a key player for TRS. Tasked with investing the pooled employer and state contributions, the BOI uses a conservative and long-term investment approach. This has consistently yielded positive returns, exceeding investment amounts.

Guaranteed Annual Benefit Adjustment (GABA)

Every January 1, an eligible benefit recipient will receive an increase in the payable benefit. The requirements and amounts are determined by Montana law.
