Apply for Retirement

Steps Towards Retirement

In your last two to three years before retirement....

Learn about the six TRS benefit allowances available to vested members.

  • You don't need to choose one now, but it's good to start considering the best one for you.

Every employer has different requirements for notice that you are retiring. Confirm these requirements with your employer.

  • If you have a collective bargaining master agreement, it's a good idea to review that as well.

Get a preliminary estimate of benefits.

You will need to have your:

  • Anticipated month and year of retirement
  • Current annual earnings and any expected pay raises
  • Estimate termination pay amount (your employer can provide this)

You have several options how to do this:

Your final year before retirement

Set a retirement date.

Ask your employer for an updated estimate of your termination pay amount.

Create or request another estimate of benefits (EOB) from TRS

  • Do this before submitting any paperwork to TRS.

Continue to review the retirement benefit allowances to consider what is best for you and your situation.
