Retirees

Retiree Defined

A TRS member who applies for a retirement allowance becomes a retiree once:

  • All employment with TRS employers is terminated.
  • At least one monthly benefit has been paid.

A bona fide separation from service is needed.

If a member is under 60 years old, the normal retirement age, with an agreement to return to work for their pre-retirement employer, that member has not terminated employment and is not eligible to receive a retirement benefit.

Read the fact sheet on terminating employment and achieving retired status for more detailed information.
